Dozens Gather for a Night of Literature in Manassas

매월네번째금요일저녁에열리는“문학을이야기하는밤”은멀리메릴랜드주에서부터온작가들을포함해서대학교재학중인학생들, 그리고미래작가의꿈을가진어린초등학생까지100여명의시인과소설가들이매나사스시의가장중심지라고할수있는매나사스역건너편에위치한지라니찻집에모였다.
시를읽고, 자신이쓰고있는소설을읽어주는시간은차의향을따라가끔씩들려오는기차의경적소리와함께추운겨울밤을따뜻하게데워주었다.
시어머니와시아버지, 시누이와함께온며느리의시, 그안에는대를이어내려온사랑의언어들이녹아들어있었고, 갑작스런사고로인해목발을집고나온남자의삶이목발에주렁주렁달려있었다.
약3시간의금요일밤은어느새지나가고다음을기약하며다시겨울로돌아가는그들발걸음은그어느때보다도가볍고경쾌해보였다.
필자도처음그자리에선사람으로서두편의영시를소개하면서많은박수를받았다. 동양인으로서오직한사람인필자는시를통해나를전달해주었고, 그들은눈빛과박수로나를격려해주었으며, 난어느새그들과함께섞여꽁꽁얼어붙은겨울밤을따뜻하게녹이고있었다.
다시한번매나사스시가버지니아주와메릴랜드주의다리역할을담당한다는느낌을지울수없었다. 하나의언어로하나되는도시, 여러사람들의생각과감정이하나의언어로전달되는장소로서말이다.

Stirring the Ink
The PWC library system has asked us, the Poet Laureate Circle, to do a poetry workshop at each of the libraries during 2018. I believe there are 11 libraries in PWC. They will have an “open mic” at each event, and their hope would be that the participants could then share a piece at Spilled Ink.
